If you don’t know who Harvey Weinstein is by now, you’ve been living under a rock. Born to a New York Jewish family, he made his mark as a Hollywood producer of films that roll off the tongue: Pulp Fiction, Gangs of New York, Chicago, Fahrenheit 9/11, Rambo, The King’s Speech. I’d name more, but we’d run out of space. A power-player fixture on the Hollywood social scene, he’s been generously awarded by the Tinsel Town elite and is a (in)famously connected liberal gadfly and supporter of the likes of Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, and a host of left-wing causes.
But you know him for his recent transgressions. He’s finally—after decades of these misdeeds—been called-out for the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young Hollywood women, sometimes in the most deviant of ways. And now he’s been forced to resign. I won’t go into the sordid details (you can read or hear about them through any news outlet), but as a father of five daughters and a reinforced platoon of grand- and great-granddaughters, I am personally outraged. I’m no prude, and I rarely condemn liaisons between consenting adults roughly equal in power and position, but his actions are a violation of decency toward women in the extreme.
But our outrage is only enhanced by the hypocrisy of the left. Saturday Night Live (SNL), the faux-comedy late-night TV show that is essentially a propaganda arm of the left, happily lampoons the foibles of the likes of Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, George Bush and a host of others from the right, but has remained pointedly silent on Weinstein. It was reported that a few of their writers developed skits or jokes related to Weinstein’s now well-publicized problems, but they were killed. SNL’s only explanation was that “it’s a New York thing,” apparently acknowledging that the problems of a prominent Jewish community member New Yorker who has made it big in uber-liberal Hollywood are off limits.
The left, of course, is famous for pontificating on what they see as moral causes: women’s rights, abortion, gun control. But when one of theirs is the offender, they conveniently look the other way. Remember Bill Clinton’s well-documented sexual exploitation of Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey and a host of others. He confessed to perjury on national TV, was impeached, barred from legal practice, and subject to court settlements for his activities. But NOW, the National Organization of (liberal?) Women, sprang to his defense, and he remains the poster-child of Democrats and their liberal causes. SNL is continuing that fine tradition of liberal hypocrisy in turning a blind eye to Weinstein.
Liberals love to paint conservatives wrongly as greedy, hateful exploiters. In fact, we are in the main people who believe limited government, personal freedom, free enterprise and individual accountability along with its rewards and consequences will do the most to advance the American dream for everyone. Some of the most generous and compassionate people I know are conservatives. As my novel, Caine’s Pestilence fictionally explored, all too often those invested in the industry of liberalism are driven by the quest for money, power, prestige, and privilege, with their heartrending “causes” only a means to a more cynical end.
In fairness, some of the liberal elite can no longer ignore what Weinstein has done. The New York Times broke the story. Then to her credit, actress Meryl Streep has belatedly condemned his actions and even poor CNN has been forced to report on them. Saturday Night Live, however, continues the fine liberal tradition of hypocrisy and selective outrage. Let’s see how the rest of the liberal establishment reacts.
